Currently you can use the "Hammer" Icon to select and place various types of buildings, the "Population" icon to purchase population for Food (if you have enough capacity), and the "End Turn" button to advance the days. All of the art is intended as a placeholder. All of the music and sounds are from free Creative Commons sources, listed below.

Developed as part of the first Stareye Atlas Game Jam with the theme of "We rise by lifting others!", OtherRise is my first attempt at a game jam.

The concept was a simple city builder / strategy/simulation game where you control one city/group amidst 3 rival cities/groups, with the goal of maximising your city's score / Quality of Life within a set period. There would be options to focus on your own development, attacking rivals, or trading with rivals. The goal was to make the optimal strategy one where you actually help your rivals to thrive as well, so that you would have stronger trading partners and waste less resources on fighting.

I was able to put around 19 hours into the project over the week-long jam, much of it on learning how to create the basics of a city-builder style game. I learned a lot about using Scriptable Object s and working with 2D Arrays, and feel I have a decent handle now to work on the meat of this game now that the game jam is finish :P

I was a bit unlucky with my non-game workload during the game jam, but also am unfamiliar enough that I had to use a lot of my time either following tutorials, or attempting things which I couldn't get to work and then scrapping them. For example, I initially spent a few hours trying to get a 2D Isometric Tilemap working to use for the game, but even following tutorials could not get it to work properly and had to scrap it.

I'm hoping to continue fleshing this idea out for a while and see how much more I can learn.

The music is cool, and even if it's incomplete it's a start. Any plans on updating it or doing more work on it after the jam?

Thanks, I've always enjoyed Kevin MacLeod's free music, even before I started using it in my projects. I'd come across it in other games / mods that sometimes use his music too (specifically Sound Sense for Dwarf Fortress.

I'm definitely planning to try to get the core concept I originally had finished, plus some "proper" art, UI polish, etc. Most likely will see what I can get done over the next couple of weeks. If for no other reason than just to learn how to do that stuff properly for the next project :D
